Monument aux Morts

Today there was an exhibition about the first world war in the abbey followed by the inauguration of lighting for the war memorial which contains 80 or so names.  We were puzzled because the monument was already floodlit but it turned out that the new light was in the colours of the tricolor.

The exhibition was interesting.  A lot of the information was similar to what you'd see in an English exhibition including a focus on troops from the "colonies".  The children from the school in Caunes had done a project on the monument itself (the symbolism, the people listed and its construction).  

As part of my project on WW1 memorials I've been looking for less obvious mementos and found one in the exhibition.  Le Canard Enchaine dates from the period and was founded because a husband and wife became fed up with "official" news and decided to report the "truth".  It still runs today so a very interesting memorial.
