Crockern Tor, Dartmoor
Back in 1198 Devon was one of the largest areas in the country producing Tin and a great deal of wealth for the King. It was declared a Stannary district which in effect made it a self governing state within the Country with its own laws and made the "tinners" above common law except for a few crimes and had its own prison at Lydford,
Crockern Tor, the small heap of rocks, at the top of the hill, was where the tinners held their Parliament. Its is said that here there was a table and seats made from granite. When the Parliament was eventually disbanded it is said that they were removed to Dunnabridge Pound a few miles away where they were used in the construction of the "Pound Keepers" seat. There is in fact a structure there that could have been those from Crockern Tor.
The history of Tin Mining in Devon is a fascinating subject and helps in the the study of Dartmoors hisory.
