Red-bellied Woodpecker

In our yard, this woodpecker is almost at the top of the bird hierarchy.  If he's on the feeder, other birds will wait their turn... except for one... the pileated woodpecker.  Which is understandable considering that the pileated is nearly 3 times the size of the red-belly.  So today, this fella found himself having to wait his turn while a pileated took its turn at the suet.  Fortunately though, the pileated was quite a messy eater and plenty of the suet ended up here on the ground below.  :)  We don't often see these birds on the ground, but for a few tasty morsels I guess it was worth standing in the snow.

Funny story... The only time I've ever seen anything move a pileated woodpecker from the suet feeder (a 12-15 inch long bird with an even bigger wing span) was when a tiny red squirrel (approx. 5 inches in size) had gotten fed up with the intruder and zoomed up the tree trunk, underneath the feeding pileated, and bit it in the bum!  That big bird move amazingly fast and didn't return that afternoon.
Gave me quite a chuckle...
