Inside and out

The soft volcanic rock of Cappadocia has been hollowed out for a variety of purposes. On yesterday's walk there were the pigeon lofts and a beehive and today hermitages and churches, as well as dwellings and pigeon lofts.
For a long time there were Christians in this part of Turkey but they were persecuted and so "built" their churches in the rocks with the outsides often giving no sign they were there, or being cut out like the pigeon lofts.
The earliest ones were plain inside but over the centuries the decoration became more elaborate, this was a late one (11th century I think but I could be a couple of hundred years out!).
I decided I had to do the collage to give a better impression of the ingenuity and detail.
Overcast today and a sprinkling of snow on the higher bits.
