Oak Door
These are part of the oak doors on Priory Gate. I parked my car in sunshine, walked round the Cathedral in the rain and got back to my car in sunshine. Talk about April showers.
The Priory Gate is one of the entrances to the Winchester Cathedral Close. Through the archway is Cheyney Court, also 15th century, which used to be the Bishop's courthouse.
The iron-studded gates once gave access to the 'working' courtyard of the medieval priory, including a guest-house and stabling for visitors.
There is a small door in the main door and the holes got me wondering what they were for. I can't find anything specific about them but they look like they could be for defensive purposes.
I like the way the oak has faded to into grey tones. The stories these gates could tell if they could talk.
