Hockley Viaduct
Well to be more accurate one and a bit arch of it.
The viaduct is over 2,000 feet long and has 33 arches, no I did not count them I looked it up on the interweb. It carried the rail link between the Didcot, Newbury and Southampton railway with the the South West Main Line, and was in use for passenger traffic until 1960, and freight until 1966. The track also passed through a tunnel under St Giles Hill before reaching the station at Chesil Street, now the site of a multi-storey car park. Much of the disused railway land, including the Viaduct and the Tunnel, is owned by Winchester City Council.
The viaduct will soon be a cycle path. I walked along it and have to say it is not an oasis of tranquility the Friday evening traffic on the M3 ensures a continuous roar. So it is not the place for a quiet walk/ride. Also there are high walls and so unless one is 6 ft or so there is no view.
A dull week at work is over, our daughter is back from Manchester and the wine is open.
Blip meet in Winchester tomorrow.
