What a Difference a Week Makes
It pays in my book to be a bit of a pessimist.
That way you don't get any shocks and there is the possibility that you might even get a nice surprise.
The optimists must have got a nasty fright this morning when they opened their curtains and found a world shrouded in a wet snow storm; but being optimists they most likely put a favourable complexion on the scene.. somehow.
Whereas we pessimists with a pessimism borne of a calvinistic approach to life in which good things have to be atoned for sooner or later, thought it was just pay back time.
There was no way we could have sat in 20 degrees of heat in Scotland in March and get off scot free. There would have to be a day of retribution, and today was that day.
Out of the window or 'oot the windae' as the local patois decrees, went plans for a day out down the coast. The snow blew almost horizontally across the Meadows as those on the way to work bent into the onslaught.
There should be a bye-law that decrees all umbrellas and raincoats should be yellow or red in order for a splash of colour to mitigate the gloom.
The dogs on the other hand seemed immune to the weather as they took their owners for a tramp over the soaking ground and ran to catch balls amongst the drookit looking seagulls hunkered down, and collared doves who were proceeding over the grass like a police line looking for forensic evidence.
There is a feeling abroad that to avoid cabin fever we will have to don wet weather gear and venture outside this afternoon.
The alternative would be to sit in the warmth and eat that chocolate Easter egg which sits so temptingly on my desk, but you know what I said about a Calvanistic approach to life.
