A Fair to Remember, Moomba 2012

It's a long weekend in Melbourne so why not have a festival! In fact, why not have three or four?

This week we have a Fashion Festival, the Food and Wine Festival, Future Music Festival and for the period of the long weekend, we have Moomba.

Moomba is like a country fair except a whole lot bigger! It's an annual festival to celebrate the vibrancy and spirit that is Melbourne city! Held on the banks of the Yarra, there are community parades, water skiing, skating comps, multi-cultural music offerings, food, food and more food, side show alley, a birdman competition and my personal favourite - fireworks every night at 9.30! This photo is from side-show alley - there is so much energy and colour and quite a few people who look slightly ill (just a suggestion - but eat AFTER you go on the rides). It attracts a big mix from across the community, but generally they all have one thing in common - they're in Melbourne and they are having a great time!

Incidentally, the first photo I chose had all the lights and colour and was probably a better photo by all accounts. It had no distracting poles, jukebox or black speakers, and it could have been a classic attempt at a popart picture. It also had no movement, no energy and didn't feel like a passing festival at all. It's strange how photos work....
