Our life in the Borders

Horbrugh Castle

A sunny day and we were out in the garden, trying to come to terms with what is needed in the garden. The new lawnmower was assembled and the grass was cut - hallelujah!

I had not noticed before that the ruins of Horsbrugh Castle could be seen through the bare branches of the trees. In fact, this rather scenic ruin never was a castle - it's described as a 'tower house'. Built in the 16th Century, it seems to have been left to decay quite soon after, as the Horbrugh family fell on hard times and abandoned it.

I felt stupidly thrilled to see a castle from my back garden.
