inspiration all around us

Inspired by illustrated letters

I have been reading this book today. I had not heard of Percy Kelly six months ago but soon after we came to live in Kendal, we stumbled across an exhibition of his illustrated letters for sale in a local art gallery. I was intrigued by his use of calligraphy and the jewel-like colours set off by strong black outlines. During his lifetime, Percy Kelly must have sent hundreds of illustrated letters to various people.

I later found out that he had corresponded with Mary Burkett for more than 25 years, during and after her time as curator (and founder) of Abbothall art gallery. She had been my art tutor at Charlotte Mason college. Her enthusiasm for all arts and crafts was infectious. We were all very fond of her.

The January issue of Cumbria Life magazine had an article about Mary Burkett and her correspondence with Percy Kelly. She had been persuaded to release the letters for editing into a book. It has made fascinating reading.
