inspiration all around us

inspired to find out more

We walked home via Strammongate Bridge. We paused to read the information board - one of many placed around the town. The bridge is thought to date from the fourteenth century, but has since been widened and strengthened.

There is a real sense of civic pride here, influenced, I imagine, by an extremely active Civic Trust. They have placed dozens of plaques around the town, summarising important buildings, people and events, such as the visit of Bonnie Prince Charlie, as he withdrew to Scotland with his troops, hotly pursued by the Duke of Cumberland - 'the butcher'. Both, apparently, used the same lodgings. That must have caused the locals to give a wry smile.

I am inspired to discover more about this ancient town, which we find ourselves beginning to call 'home'.
