Making Progress!

Porch is starting to look like a new porch today.

Bright and early at the house for 1030am (as per normal - really must do something about that), and got cracking on it more or less straight away. Less procrastinating, more doing.

First job before I can finish the decking (see yesterday's Blip for my stopping point last night), I need to address the house roof deck at the point where it started leaking originally several years ago. I can say "several years ago" with some certainty.

If you are new to my BlipDiary then the porch originally looked like this. In reality it looked much worse, half the roof had rotted through. Another view of the ex-porch is here.

What I find fascinating about this renovation is seeing what other people have done in the past. I discovered today whilst inspecting the house roof decking was that the hole in the porch was a known problem as I found 5 layers of shingle on the rotten edge. Essentially someone had tried adding more shingles to cure the problem - they also used sealant or tar liberally and glued 3 levels of shingles together, which made it interesting when I needed to pull them off.

Whether it solved the problem is also debatable. However, it did answer the question of why all the lower shingles by the porch were raised!

Shingles when laid properly can be 3 deep where there is a small overlap, so seeing 5 layers was interesting. Also makes it interesting when you are trying to thin the layers out so you can add the new shingles later.

Spent two hours repairing this section of the roof, cut out the perfect shape in the roof deck, then cut a near perfect replacement deck piece, persuaded it into place. Even more pleased with myself to actually get the decking perfectly over the roof joists. Very satisfied with that job.

The afternoon was spent laying the remainder of the porch deck, felting the porch deck, laying a tin layer between the house and porch, and then finishing the roof off with shingles. Due to the way everything has to be laid the house roof bit had to wait.

Didn't get as far as I wanted today, but I'm pleased that the end is in sight. Pity it's about to rain for a couple of days.....
