A Resting Place
I have been told I write in the style of Andy Rooney...so here's a little Andy Rooney from the grave. (No...he is not buried here!)
Didja ever wonder why so many cemeteries are named Fairview? Is it to appeal to the living or to the dead?
If it is to the living...how about Wonderful View...Splendid View...Boffo View...or even Great View? I can hear the cemetery salesman now..."Ya know...as we stand here now on this slight incline...It's not what I would call a scenic vista...but...it's a fair view." Not a great selling point.
If it is to the deceased...then perhaps it gets a little personal...a little touchy. "It's like when CBS demanded that I trim my eyebrows. I explained to them that my brows were living things...and were supporting hundreds of tiny microscopic creatures." Same with the graves. Does it matter to the buried people what kind of view that they have? Again...subject to opinion, but again...not a great selling point.
I think I will settle the issue as only a crusty old curmudgeon could. They called it Fairview because it saved on the price of the wrought iron sign.
Didja ever wonder if they should have stepped it up one notch to Goodview? Might have sold a few more plots.
Disclaimer: With respect for the deceased...this lovely little parcel of land is located in Linden, Michigan. May they rest in peace.
