gravity always wins

An both an aphorism, truism and a crackingly-sung lyric I've always considered this quite handy to bear almost constantly in mind.

Occasionally it might drag a fly down into some ointment but it is the fault of neither gravity nor fly; both are simply doing what they have to be doing at any particular point in time. Flies can after all be picked out, leaving the ointment unsullied.
