Craig, Michelle and Alison

Whatever you think about these kind of awards there is something very moving about seeing the bravery of those who go and work in dangerous areas. My son is an army Captain. He will be going back to Afghanistan early next year.

Last night I cried as I watched my friend and ex-neighbour, Alison, thank Michelle Ping, the navy reservist who saved the life of her son, Private Craig Paterson, 4 Scots on the 2 July when he was shot in Helmand. I've known Craig since before he was born. He is 22 next month. He is very lucky to be alive after being shot in the head. Michelle was very brave to save him and Alison has had to have enormous courage to cope with the aftermath. My son says 'it's a job, it's what I trained for'' - it is a job, but it's a dangerous one. Craig, I hope you go on to get stronger and stronger, Alison, I admire you, you are an amazing lady and, well I pray that my son comes back safe, for a third time. And Michelle - well she deserves that award.
