The Champagne Pool, Wai-O-Tapu

We arrived at Wai-O-Tapu in time to see the Geyser erupt, it does this promptly at 10:15am everyday- with a little help from some soap powder! Forget your mentos and diet coke, you should see what soap powder and a Geyser can do.

Walking around the 'thermal wonderland' which is truly amazing we saw more bubbling mud, plenty of steam and some brightly coloured sulpur crystals. The Champagne Pool is the largest spring in the district which has steaming, bubbling water at about 70 c. There are lots of different minerals in the water which contribute to the bright colours found around the edge of the pool. At the end of our walk we arrived at a crater full of vivid lime green water, the 'Devil's Bath'.

To top off our geothermal activities tomorrow we are going to walk the Tongariro Crossing, up to the volcanic craters of Mount Tongariro.
