Moeraki Boulders
These are the Moeraki Boulders - large, smooth spehrical boulders lying along the coast line of the township Moeraki - spilled across the beach like a child's discarded marbles.
Local M?ori legends explained the boulders as the remains of eel baskets, calabashes, and kumara washed ashore from the wreck of an Arai-te-uru, a large sailing canoe. This legend tells of the rocky shoals that extend seaward from Shag Point as being the petrified hull of this wreck and a nearby rocky promontory as being the body of the canoe's captain.
I was down in Dunedin for the weekend visiting family and a trip was made out to Moeraki. We went to lunch at what must be the most amazing place ever - Fleurs. Fleurs is this little restaurant that sits right on the waterfront of an old jetty and predominantly sells fish on its menu. What is caught that morning on the boats is what is on offer in the kitchen that day.
The restaurant itself is filled with bits n bobs that adds to its charm and looks over the sandy beach and clear blue sea, while Fleur floats about meeting and greeting everyone with the biggest smile on her face. The food was divine and the portions were huge - I sampled the green-lipped mussels which arrived in a bucket and were the best mussels I have ever had! Oh I could rave about the place for ages..... and everyone I have met who has visited Fleur's raves about the place as well.
If any blippers ever make it to the sleepy village of Moeraki I beg you to go to Fleurs - you will not be disappointed!
