Sawpit Gully
Today my uncle and I went for a walk up Sawpit Gully. Well, it was suppose to be a walk - it ended up being an endurance test.
My uncle is a mountain goat. Off he went pounding up the hill, jumping across rocks and verges stopping every so often for me to catch up - bless him he made it out as if he was stopping to point some native fauna or flora or to explain a bit of the history - but i knew better... No sooner had I caught my breath than he was off again. He had one gear and that was forward. I have a lot of photos from this walk - a camera is a great excuse to stop for a breather....
On the descent he charged on down ignoring the tracks, making his own way across the brush. I, being sensible, stayed on the well defined single path going down the steep gully. Yes it took me longer but I wasn't going to risk any broken legs on a traveller's insurance policy!
Uncle B is a proper bushman - he's the guy you want on your team in apoclayptic event. He has survied a helicopter accident, a car crash and cancer; in his early 60's he has the fitness levels of a man half his age !
The interpretation boards advise you to leave 2-3 hours to complete the circuit. Our time - 1 hour and 27 mins. I was well chuffed that I kept up with him - but shouldn't it have been the other way round????
