Seal pup

This is a grey seal pup that was asleep on the shore just behind the harbourmaster's house at Scapa pier.

I was just taking a photo of the bay when I noticed him (or her) just a few feet below the wall. I actually thought it might be dead, but it woke when I whistled. Probably it was quite miffed to be woken, but I left quickly once I'd shot a few portraits.

The shoals of young herring that have been in the bay must have moved on, because there were far fewer gulls and auks today.
