Little auk

Alle alle. I know I've posted an image like this recently, but it's the first winter I've got close to these birds, so I like photographing them.

This and another, and larger guillemots were all feeding on a dense shoal of, I think, young herring massed off the slipway by Scapa pier. Nearby I saw my first great-crested grebe in Orkney. Not an uncommon species down south, but described as 'very rare' for the islands in the Orkney Bird Report.
