Turkey Dinner

I have been stopping at the Turkey Roost restaurant in Kawkawlin, Michigan...for probably 40 years, and my wife has been going there a little longer than that. The outside of the building hasn't changed except for a paint job. Always pink. The inside hasn't changed much in that 40 years, either. One thing I'm glad they did stopped doing was having a pen out front full of turkeys. It made you feel kind of bad when the turkey that you heard gobble-gobbling,and seeing if it would peck your finger... might be someones dinner the next day. What were they thinking? It's not quite like picking out the lobster that you want to have boiled.

The meal is always fast, and consistently good. As you look at it...the meal will set you back $ 7.25, and that comes with homemade biscuits that aren't pictured, and the dressing is hiding under the gravy along with the meat. We've always been too full to try the homemade pies, and the huge strawberry shortcake.

It's strangely refreshing to stop and know that everything will be the same. We didn't see her today...but there is one waitress who has been there for the entire 40+ years. We've watched her grow from a teenager into probably a grandma. The only thing we've seen change are the prices, and the waitresses keep getting younger.

Our fall colors are just about gone. Terribly windy today. My van was doing the shimmy-shake all over the highway. My team...the University of Michigan...lost to Michigan State today...so now we have to listen to those foul-mouthed, red-necked, green-wearing farmers for another year. There was a time that I really cared, but now I just say...may the best team win. I didn't watch one play...too busy eating my turkey dinner.
