The Beartooth Highway and Yellowstone National Par
I don't like to keep making these composite
pictures, but when you see a lot of stuff in a day...I hate to leave anything
out.
We left Red Lodge, Montana...again at about 7:45-8
a.m. A nice breakfast at our hotel. I had oatmeal in honor of one of my favorite
actors...Wilford Brimley. Before we got out of town...we stopped and saw the elk
in the top left-hand corner. Unreal. All made out of bristlecone pine branches.
Sometimes peoples talents makes me sick. Such creativity that I don't
have.
We were soon on the Beartooth Highway. A noted
traveller...Charles Kuralt...called it the most beautiful drive in America. It
rises, via many switchbacks, to 10,947 feet. We had a few places where we could
get close to the snow. From left to right...it is me(Tim, Terrie, Lisa, Dad.) We
are getting ready to toss a snowball at my self-timed camera. Terrie's snowball
actually hit my camera. I wrestled her down, and rubbed her face in the
snow.(Not really.) My sister Lisa straddled the sign near the top...to be both
in Montana and Wyoming. We were way above tree-line, and eventually started
down.
We had lunch at the small waterfall in the upper
right corner. Last time we were here...Dad and I got in it. COOOOLD! A few years
of age makes you think twice about such things. But...what a great setting for a
picnic. We had to fight off a long-haired hippie from Idaho for the site, but it
was worth it. (2nd lie.)
We hit Cooke City, MT., for potty and t-shirt
stops...then headed for the north-east entrance to Yellowstone. A few miles
in...we saw the lone buffalo. We always felt sorry to see just one buffalo. It
usually means they have outlasted their usefullness, and can't challenge the
other bulls to stay in the herd. Kind of sad. We saw many more bison, but they
were a long ways off.
The antelope came next. They were the closest ones
we saw. They were following the leader, and deciding whether to cross
the road. They never crossed. A beautiful animal.
We went outside the park to stay. A 2 room cabin in Gardiner, Mt. 108 bucks, but we were tickled to get it.
