To the Lighthouse: Cape Wrath

Today we undertook the trip to the lighthouse at Cape Wrath, the most north westerly point of the British mainland.

Getting there is something of an adventure in itself, consisting of a ferry crossing in a small boat followed by an 11-mile minibus trip along a rough road through some wild country, fitted around the firing times on the active MOD firing range that occupies a good deal of the territory between the ferry landing and the lighthouse.

The whole operation is organised in a colourful and seemingly ad-hoc 'Heath Robinson' manner, which makes this truly a trip to remember.

Amazingly, after so much wild weather since our arrival in the north west last weekend, today turned out to be bright and sunny; this allowed us to enjoy some tea and home-made cake outside the 'Ozone Cafe' during the hour or so we were allowed at the lighthouse, before the minibus took us back to the ferry before the road closed at 2.45 for the MOD to begin their live firing in the area.
