The Tour of Britain cycle race started in my home town of Peebles this morning, with the first stage racing across the Borders to Dumfries.

There was a real buzz on the High Street as crowds gathered to watch the cyclists, wonder at their amazingly light bikes, and generally enjoy the excitement.

Watching the riders line up for the start, what struck me was the sense of camaraderie between them; even those on opposing teams. I guess that was partly nerves, but as countdown approached there was a subtle change of mood, as they each made the final checks on their gloves, shoes, helmets and glasses, and a hush descended as they all became very focussed. As the flag dropped and they pushed their pedals down for the first time in earnest, there was a cheer to set them off.
