Abreuveure

This is an abreuveure - a cattle drinking place of which there are 30 or so in the Parish of St Martin's in Guernsey. No one is too sure when this was constructed, but it is mentioned in the Parish Records in 1803.

The funny thing is that it was also used as the village washing place - where the women would wash the laundry, beating it clean on a flat stone. Doesn't sound too healthy to me and I just hope the cows kept their legs crossed while getting their drink!
