Liberation

The Channel Islands were of course occupied by Adolf Hitler during the war. On 9th May 1945 (much later than was necessary felt many islanders) the British arrived to liberate Guernsey. A massive sundial was built and on it were carved the statement by Winston Churchill that "today our dear Channel Islands" will be set free.

Also carved were the various events of that historic day - the surrender, the landing, the raising of the flag. On 9th May each year the shadow of the gnomon falls exactly on the appropriate time. Even at this time of the year it is pretty accurate!

A nice day here in St Peter Port. Hot sun, freezing wind.....
