Helter-skelter

Strength in numbers.

One swallow may not make a summer, but how about fourteen?

I've been watching nextdoor's swallows for a few weeks now but it's been impossible to get a shot of them as they flit around so fast and they've never come very close to our house. Got back this morning from taking my husband to the airport and couldn't believe it - swallows everywhere!

I lost count at 14. The fledglings were (and still are!) sitting on the roof, on the shed, on wires - even on my washing line. Loads more (presumably the mums and dads) are flying around, chirping like mad and every now and then swooping down - but not stopping - to feed the babies. I think this might be the second brood of the season.

To my amazement they don't seem to be bothered by me at all and so I took loads of pictures. This one isn't the clearest but it's my favourite. Now, just need to cross my fingers that the bats are as obliging later!

Agh - two just flew in the house but they got out again OK - left whatever they had in their beaks all over the floor though!
