The Vegetable Garden
Difficult to get in all the bits I wanted to, but you get the general idea! When we bought the cottage, just over two years ago, the back garden was knee high grass, and plenty of weeds too. Slowly we've been making it into the sort of garden we want, including a vegetable plot.
It's a square bed, divided into triangles, like the Scottish saltire. It's mostly seasonal vegetables, and perennial herbs, with the odd poppy, sunflower and lavender thrown in for good luck! Most things are doing really well this year, apart from the garlic. All the beans and peas are starting to produce pods and we picked our first proper sized courgette today too. Lots of lettuces too, and they haven't bolted - yet!
Very rewarding to see things eventually bearing fruit., especially in the greenhouse, where the plant boldly labelled as a nectarine, has produced peaches! Seven lovely furry peaches, not very big and not very juicy, but very tasty all the same. The grapevine, that came from the same chap, has got several bunches of tiny grapes on it, some of which are turning black. I know I should be thinning them out, but it is heartbreaking to reduce the number even further!
We have two types of tomato - tumbler ones hanging from the roof and Gardeners Delight, a lovely cherry one, growing up canes. All the plants have plenty of fruits on them, but they are all very green! We just need a bit more heat - yesterday was great, but today it was back to being overcast with only tempting glimpses of the sun. Fingers crossed for the rest of "the summer"!
Update on the finger - thanks for all the concern! Healing nicely, new dressing, can now knit again, but still can't type with that finger so have to use my middle finger for twice as many letters as usual! Certainly a salutary lesson . . . !
