Bird in the Rain

There's something wonderfully cartoon or puppet like about this stone bird, one of four at the corners of the base of the Melville Monument commemorating Henry Dundas, first viscount Melville. Not many people had time to stop, as they hurried by with hoods and umbrellas up against the rain. For over two centuries a locked garden with access only for local residents and businesses, it was opened to the public in 2008. For me, I associate it with the start of my HND - we paid a class visit to an exhibition of Vanity Fair photographs at the Portrait Gallery and some of us had lunch in the gardens, sheltering from the rain under the trees, before heading over to another exhibition at the City Arts Centre.
