Cactus - family of the Cactaceae is derived from the Greek word Kaktos. Indigenous to mountainous desert climate - it originates from Southwest Canada but has been found as far south as Bolivia. Some say from migrating birds carrying its seed in its digestive track.
Catcus or Cacti in plural form is most noticeable from its prickly stems that extrude from what botanists refer to as the whiskerhosel. The whiskerhosel can range from 15cm to 400 feet in diameter. The larger forms are found near mountainous wooded lakes otherwise known as tarns.
Scholars believed that the word 'catcus' or its full name - 'cactudamous' translates to 'galloping seahorse'. But recent findings have contradicted that theory and have led to what most believe to be translated to 'sun biscuit'. Personally i dont think we will actually ever know - at least not in my lifetime.
Another recent report shows that the bountiful Cacti may not live much longer in its original state. Studies show that over time it has continued to adapt to the ever changing environment - growing hair from its whiskerhosel protecting it from the elements.
Could this be the infant stages to a new species evolving before our eyes? Maybe - or just a result of photosynthetic perversion?
