Scoliopteryx libatrix

Today's the day ................... to be saved by the moth

I did take some pictures today but they were all desperately boring. Trust me, you wouldn't have been remotely interested in any of them - but needs must, I was on my way to the computer to choose one to blip. That's when I spotted the moth.

I had no idea what it was so I had to go and find a moth book and look it up. I think it's a Herald Moth or Scoliopteryx libatrix to its friends. It says that it is a common species found in Britain and other parts. During the winter the Herald moth hibernates in dark, cool structures (e.g. cellars, barns and caves - so maybe it was up in the attic?), returning to take wing again from March to June. Its habitat is woodland parks and gardens, and (perhaps consequently) the resting wing pattern resembles a dead, shrivelled leaf.

So there you have it. Isn't that interesting? See how good it is to be a blipper - you learn new things all the time ...........
