Ahu Akivi
Hired bikes today and rode around part of the Island. This is Ahu Akivi. The Ahu is the platform the Moai statues stand on, it is a sacred place and no-one should walk on it. This did not stop some dumband disrepctful tourists from walking on there, this sort of thing really annoys me, if you visit a place like this you should take the time to find out how to behave with respect to the peoplewhoçs home it is. Rant over.
None of the moai were left standing by the indigenous people before they disappeared, all the sites like this have been restored.
We saw a lot of ruined sites on the island as well, the place must have been heaving with people when it was occupied by the tribes who put the Moai here.
The bikes were hard work and uncomfortable in the heat, 30km of riding was enough, really earned the Escudo beer back at Hanga Roa afterwards.
