Red Ram

...well, more of an orangey colour really I suppose.

My wife and I first came across the phenomenon of "orange rams" near Biggar on our summer holiday back in 1995. It seems to have begun as a 'whole body' variation on the practice of applying 'raddle powder' to the belly of the ram, so that it marked (and thus identified to the farmer) which ewes it had 'covered'.

But googling for the expression "orange sheep" nowadays will reveal how entire flocks are now coloured - purely as a fashion item it would appear - and how the practice has spread from its SW Scottish origins to the Highlands, and now to other parts of the UK.
