Homes fit for heroes.
David Lloyd-George famously spoke of a land fit for heroes, and homes fit for heroes at the close of the Great war.
Jump forward almost thirty years and the second world war had ended. Housing was a problem, and one solution was pre-fabricated homes, erected in thousands across the country to house the dispossessed. Many were of concrete construction, and intended to last for around ten years, by which time permanent solutions would be in place.
On the edge of Poringland there was a row of prefabricated bungalows, which lasted through to the late nineties. They have gone now, with only their garden gates, and rectangular depressions in the ground to show where they stood. This is one of the sites, it's hard to show the strange emptiness, but the gate does look a little isolated.
Just around the corner one bungalow remains occupied. I do know of other villages where greater numbers remain.
