Commuting

One of the gardeners had come to work by bicycle this morning. The gardens are on a hill just outside the village because there's no room for them in the narrow old streets. For retired men from the village gardening is treated like work and they do several hours in the morning before going home to the lunch that their wives have prepared. I'm treated rather suspiciously by those who don't know me so well if I go to the garden in the morning as it is generally considered that women should be doing their housework and cooking. Luckily we've got several good friends in the gardens around ours who accept my strange ways!

I didn't stay long today, though, as there was a lot of noise from the development work on land next to the gardens and I found it annoying and upsetting to have the constant reminder that there are a hundred houses planned for the site. We'll try to do most of our gardening at weekends over the next few months, I think, when it's more peaceful.
