Thistle Down

The Past

I saw the past...lie still,
T'was though it had been sleeping.
In silence did it idly sit,
Its eyes were full of weeping.

Perhaps because ill-will was forced,
With vainness of the pen.
That wrong conceptions had been laid,
Upon the minds of men.

For the hoary-head of years partook,
The wisdom of the Sages.
In buried earth and papyrus rolls,
It was preserved unto the ages.

On foot...it crept on rooted paths,
And went to early graves.
Along the rim-rock of all time,
It slept in darkened caves.

Until enlightenment came along,
It climbed a rugged-cleft.
And made the world a better place,
By the heritage...that was left.
