Dinner in Eretria
Just as we sat in our seats at the taverna the sun started to set. For Greeks it was the equivalent of an early bird dinner, but what a view. Most of the time I'm pretty disconnected from the natural world. It's not something I really get, but I've spent every summer of my life in Evia and I can just sort of feel it. When the birds get anxious and fly low it's about to rain. I know where to look for certain types of coral. I know the ocean is dead calm, like a sheet of glass, in the early morning. Then the waves start north to south, but change direction during lunch. Eating figs and almonds off the trees. I think those days are over though. With my parents moving back to Greece my grandmother is likely to move in with them, as she should. I guess as kids we have something we call home, but it's more than that. And one day we grow up and lose it. We can always try to find it again, but it will never be the same. At some point I guess you realise the best you can do is give someone else a home. Maybe that's better in a way. I don't know.
