Bromley House Library
Bromley House Library is a subscription library in Nottingham town centre, which hides away very effectively behind a non-descript doorway next to a charity shop. It's the most amazing place.
In this photo you can see the spiral staircase that leads to the middle of three floors, which is quite shaky, a red-ribbon-tied notice asks that only one person at a time uses the stairs.
You can see the gallery that runs round the main room on the lower floor.
You can see the grandfather clock that has silver plates engraved with the time difference between Nottingham and Greenwich (4'33 - John Cage, are you listening?) and Nottingham and St Pauls Cathedral (4'10)... and the longitude and latitude of all the Nottingham churches, presumably so religious rites are observed at exactly the right time.
You can see one of those wheely ladders that runs along bookshelves that are too tall for people to reach the top.
And... you get something of the atmosphere of the place. It's amazing. I might join, just so I can go there whenever I want!
