Hillbrow
Another holiday relic - well work-trip-cum-holiday - from Durban. It's a sculpture from a single piece of wood and was the most expensive souvenier from the most expensive shop - but we fell in love with it and bought it anyway (ah, those heady days of financial freedom). The lady in the shop had christened it Hillbrow after the area in Johannesburg famous for overcrowding, poverty and crime - not a very romantic association. Getting the thing home via a safari trip and three flights was a bit of an adventure - clearly we didn't have our practical heads on in those days - but glad we made the effort.
