Going up

These lights became a very familiar sight today. They illuminate the lift in our Bristol apartment block - a small metal box (the lift that is) that became like a second third home by the end of the day.

It was quite a trying day. I had to do an inventory of the flat - and I tried to be thorough. You just know that when you eventually come to leave the place, someone will say, 'You lose £100 of your deposit because you must have caused that 2mm scuff mark that wasn't on the inventory.'

Trouble is, the more thorough you are, the more you realise just how filthy the place really is. Hmmm.

We had a cold caller. That might not sound particularly significant, but this block has a 21st century, state-of-the-art security system that almost requires you to be beamed up like Captain Kirk.

To hear a rat-a-tat-tat on the door was quite disconcerting. A neighbour, perhaps? No, it was nPower, trying to flog us electricity. How did she get there? I'll never know. Made sure she went back from whence she came.

Anyway, we now have the priority elements in place - a cafetiere, of course, Ready Brek, radio, sauce (only joking, work pals!), The Guardian, a lovely new duvet and a bottle of Vimto cordial, courtesy of my wonderful daughter who knew I couldn't find one anywhere.

So it's almost like home. Just need some extra pans to cook with! And I'm still not sure about going TV-less for the moment. Might have to do things like listen to the radio and make polite conversation. But a change is as good as a rest, don't you think?
