Every other Saturday morning...
...I don't have a clinic so I don't have to rush off to work.
Every other Saturday morning I get to do 'mummy' things. I potter in the kitchen, put on washing; do the ironing, chat with my family and make something special and fun for Saturday supper...Saturday suppers are always something fun (like sushi, sticky ribs, fajitas or home made Cornish pasties...it's the rules!) to be consumed while watching something naff...like Strictly Come Dancing or the X-Factor...that's in the rules too (the only day of the week TV is allowed at a meal time!). How we arrived at the 'rules' I don't know...they sort of evolved as H grew up and have become woven into the tapestry of our family life.
To these rules H has added his own. He does his homework on a Saturday morning, sitting at the kitchen table. He likes to get it all out of the way so that he can enjoy the rest of the weekend. He particularly likes it when I'm there in the kitchen as he can regale me with 'interesting' facts.
I was chopping up vegetables today and suddenly I felt the overwhelming urge to capture him studying. He reminds me of me at the same age (!) with one exception: I thought homework was a waste of time for the most part. I was a swotty little geek so I did it but I resented all of it with the glorious exception of two years of middle school. Henry loves homework. Now this might be because he's a bit eccentric ('Only a bit?' I hear anyone who knows him shout!) but it might also be because his homework is better designed and more engaging. It certainly looks that way to me. The two years of middle school during which I actively enjoyed homework it was challenging, engaging and fun and if you're going to have homework then it does rather need to have a 'fun' element in my opinion. I hope that H continues to enjoy his studies and we can still be participating in this homely little Saturday morning ritual in a few years time.
Today's task was to write a short story using synonyms. He discovered a children's thesaurus on the bookshelf (Bob's from when he was a child) and off he went...something about a COLOSSAL giant who BELLOWED and STOMPED!
Not sure why but I think this looks nice larger :-)
