The Toorie
Broke my indoors spell by driving to Nairn for a brisk walk along the beach and back - I haven't really looked at this part of Nairn before. Back in the car I stopped to investigate a large open area with a bandstand. This was just a hundred yards from the bandstand at the top of a small rise. It commemorates nothing at all. A plaque says that it appeared mysteriously overnight in August 1859. An elaborate joke? According to the plaque it was believed that apprentice masons may have been responsible. Possibly acting under the patronage of Dr Grigor who was responsible for a number of building projects in the area. The plaque says it is known as the "Toorie".
