Day 8
Day 8
Katakolon - Greece
This has to be the quietest port I have ever seen.
It is really small (population 300) and really nice - not the usual industrial wasteland that a big ship like this has to go into.
The only let down as we disembarked was the rain.
We walked the 100 yards from the gangway to the taxi rank outside the port gate and negotiated a price for the 4 of us to be taken to Olympia - where the original games started in 776BC.
As we got into the taxi and headed off the heavens opened - and boy were the Gods angry.
I have never seen rain like it. It was unbelievable.
But as we arrived at Olympia the rain stopped and the clouds parted to give us a wonderful hot and sunny time to do our exploring in??. although there were some monumental thunder claps as the clouds departed. It was all really quite apt for the location.
The ruins are just that, with very little left vertical making it quite hard to get photos to do the place justice which is a real shame (it is also difficult to photograph due to the hundreds of tourists crawling over the place - no idea where all the coach loads of American and Germans came from because it wasn?t our ship and we were there before the coaches from ours).
Back at the ?port? and SWMBO and I went for a walk along the only street and had a look in the tourist tat shops to see what useless gifts we could buy for friends/family.
Of course SWMBO managed to find a quality shop and is coming home with a gold eternity ring.
