Carol: Rosie & Mr. Fun

Her Birthday is Tomorrow

Ashly, our oldest granddaughter, will be 22 tomorrow. Last weekend while the family was all gathered for the memorial service, I had a moment to ask her what she might want or possibly need for her birthday. She didn't think she needed "anything."

So I got a little crazy with her and said, "Come on, you must want something." And then I mentioned a list of possibilities. Included in the list was "iPod." She didn't latch onto any one thing and said she'd think about it.

Thursday my phone signaled a text with a message that read, "Hey sorry to text you so late but if you still want to get me an iPod for my birthday that would be cool."

Ash rarely asks for anything. So I knew it took everything in her to ask. I replied asking which model she'd like to have and she replied with "Oh whatever you select." I told her she'd need to go with us to the Apple Store. I really wanted her to select. So our calendars aligned for this morning.

Here she is with Grandpa Fun and they are both getting an earful about the 4 models to choose from. Soon the selection was made and a bit later we were making our exit with one happy girl. We got back to her car at our house about 15 minutes late, so she was quickly on her way to her job at Ace Hardware. She sells hammers and nails and lumber and bolts and nuts and screws and plants and pipes and electrical thingys. She amazes me with her "hardware" knowledge.

She is a full-time college student with a goal to be a nurse. She also works for the local school district five mornings a week with a severely handicapped child, and enjoys that job immensely.

Tomorrow evening we will be with the family for Ashly's birthday dinner and celebrating, so my blip will come in late because we'll be out having fun.

Good night from Southern California.
