Sack Races......

At the Alexander Graham Bell Museum! Today was the annual Harvest Home festival at the Bell Museum in Baddeck. This has been taking place since around 1985 and is in celebration of the yearly 'Harvest Home' picnic that Bell and his family put on every year, around this time, at their home Beinn Bhreagh. There were a few vendors, myself included, that set up tables out on the lawn. It was a beautiful sunny day and there were lots of visitors.

But here's the really crazy thing! It brought back a memory from about 1980...so probably about 30 years ago! I was an administrator at the Graduate Program in Museum Studies at the University of Toronto. Our students had to do an internship during the summer and one of them did his at Louisburg, here on Cape Breton Island. Usually one of the professors did all the checking up on the students during their intership, but for some reason I was given this one!!! So, i headed to Cape Breton, rented a car and spent about 2 weeks here. Well, the university was paying my way, so why not make a holiday out of it was my thought!! Anyway, I remember driving around the Cabot Trail, and the only place I spent any time was Baddeck! Mainly cos I knew that Bell had been born in Edinburgh (my birth place) and so it seemed fitting that i visit a fellow Scots place of importance. I do have a very foggy vision of the main street of Baddeck, but really, it was 30 years ago. So there I was, sitting on the lawn at that same museum, 30 years later, selling my pottery (I didn't know at that time I was even going to be a potter)....let alone live here!! It just got me shaking my head at the absolute mystery of how our lives unfold....gives me a feeling of complete trust in the path I have chosen!

We had a very lovely day, watched the kids play all the old games, sack race, egg on a spoon, bubble making etc.....lots of great fresh produce....at this very moment we have purple potatoes - i kid you not.....cooking up for dinner! they'll look absolutely stunning next to the red beets eh!

I was meant to blip the results of the butter dishes.....but i decided this was a more interesting story....so maybe tomorrow!!!
