Church Bell

Many of the tiny chapels in the Paxos olive groves hang a single bell from a nearby tree as here. This bell is so old and covered in verdigris that I had to look closely to see the figures of saints, bishops and Christ on the cross that encircle the widest part.

The churches usually have small burial grounds behind them but this church also has a special area at the front. A burial place for three men. Probably two brothers and one younger, perhaps a son of one, they are aged 52 48 and 29 and they all died on the same day in 1944. Set in the cross at the head of the white marble tomb are three black and white portraits. The men are dignified smartly dressed in suits and ties, neatly trimmed moustaches and oiled hair. I know no more.
