Baku gargoyle.
I like this face. It's next to the fabulous German bakery which opened earlier this year and is the only place to get good multigrain bread. It also does great croissants, pastries and cakes to order... but I digress. I'm saddened to see that the Baku that greeted us in February 2009 when we first arrived, a city of brown-grey buildings, art deco gems inbetween austere Soviet boxes, is slowly being sand-blasted, covered with modern facades or simply bulldozed into the history books. Someone is trying to turn Baku into a city of creamy gold sandstone buildings and with it they are wiping out the sense of history here. So I've decided to take as many photos as possible before it's too late!
