Wirksworth
Today we went out into the Peak & decided to visit a small town that neither us have ever visited before; Wirksworth.
Wirksworth is one of those places that you drive near to, but never actually visit. Indeed, I always turn right just before the large bridge which acts as a boundary marker to the town. That right turn at the bridge takes a visitor to more glamorous locations such as Ashbourne and Carsington Water. In short, there has never been a burning desire to ever visit the place. I don't know anyone who has actually visited. I could be the first.
I was really surprised just how wonderful Wirksworth actually is. It has a church which holds many Norman and Medieval splendours and is worth a visit to the town just for the treasures inside the church. Architecturally, the town is a gem with many styles of building competing for space, creating a wonderful patchwork of styles from different eras.
If you are a local, then give Wirksworth a try. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.
