Self-portrait Tuesday: not-so-happy feet
Grrrrr.
Just over a year ago I took up running. To my surprise, after not being able to run the length of myself when I started, within 6 weeks I had run my first 10km race, and after 4 months I competed in my first half marathon.
Unfortunately my body did not approve! After 13 miles on the trot I had picked up a nasty knee injury, a new one to add to my list. I've got hypermobility, which means my joints flex much further than they should, and my knees, hips and shoulders often dislocate. As a child I was very flexible, and loved showing off my "double-joints", but as I got older and the joints got more damaged I started to suffer. I had my first physio at the age of about 12, but it wasn't until a couple of years ago, when my hips got so bad that I could barely walk to work, that a doctor put two and two together.
Last night I was reading a blog by a twitter friend @lisam75; she started running around the same time as me but is now competing in triathlons! I was inspired, so this morning I headed out for a little jog to test the knee. I had only planned to run a mile, but at half distance I had to pull up. My lungs felt good, my legs felt strong, but the pain was still there. Bah. I really really want to run again. Time to call the physio.
PS: Last night I attended a very interesting event at the Apple Store in Belfast, where Rob (bluestonefilm) was giving a presentation about film-making. I didn't know what to expect when he invited me but I really enjoyed it. I have to say capturing moving pictures seems like even more fun than taking static ones! It was great to meet Rob and find out a bit about what he does, I hope we can meet up again soon for a proper chat over a few drinks :)
