Ecclefechan
I was working down in Dumfriesshire today and had little time for a picture.
However I did pass through the small town of Ecclefechan (love that name!) which was the birthplace of Thomas Carlisle so he is the subject of today's Blip.
Thomas Carlisle, born in 1795, was a famous writer, philosopher, and social commentator.
Some Carlisle quotes:-
Do the duty which lies nearest to you, the second duty will then become clearer.
All that mankind has done, thought or been: it is lying as in magic preservation in the pages of books.
A man lives by believing something: not by debating and arguing about many things.
A laugh, to be joyous, must flow from a joyous heart, for without kindness, there can be no true joy.
A loving heart is the beginning of all knowledge.
Be not a slave of words.
Blessed is he who has found his work; let him ask no other blessedness.
Clever men are good, but they are not the best.
What we become depends on what we read after all of the professors have finished with us. The greatest university of all is a collection of books.
The suffering man ought really to consume his own smoke; there is no good in emitting smoke till you have made it into fire.
